New Blog

Well, I finally got this blog up and running. I’ve been looking around for a good theme for a while. Although I don’t entirely love this theme, I think it’ll do just fine for now. Maybe once I learn a little better how Wordpress works I can find a theme that fits my needs a little better.

I also just bought a new camera yesterday. I bought the Canon SD780 IS. So, pretty soon I’ll be able to post videos and pictures. I’m going to need that on my trip.

I also submitted some different couchsurfing requests for this next week, since I’m moving out of my house tomorrow. I haven’t heard back from anybody yet, but, maybe that’s because they can tell I’m from Utah. Well, it won’t be hard for me to find places to stay, I’d just like to stay with some random people.

  The Wordpress theme looks pretty good. Fairly professional looking. The only thing I don’t like is that you have to click on each of the posts to read the whole post, since only a summary is shown on the home page. Maybe that’s intentional, but it seems like it discourages people from reading all the posts in their entirety. Perhaps people only read the ones they are interested in that way though. Also, I think it’s a good idea to categorize each of your posts with a few tags. The FCPA Blog is a good example of effective tagging (http://www.fcpablog.com/). At the end of each of their posts, they put some tags which cover the main topics in the post. Then, you can go to their archive page and click on a tag to get a compilation of all those posts (http://www.fcpablog.com/archive/). Some suggested tags for your blog coule be: gear, sponsorships, safety, hitchiking, job shadow, entrepeneurship, etc.

  Yeah, I have the option of making the blog list the complete post, or to just have the preview like it is now. I’ve looked at other blogs that just have the preview, and I like it that way, but I think it would look better if I upload a picture with each preview. I don’t have my camera right now, so that’s hard to do, but I think I might like to try that. I could also have the complete post, but, we’ll see.

  Also, it’s true that I need to tag my blog posts. I guess I’m just trying to figure out what kind of tags to use. I was thinking of some 3 main categories: Places I’ve Been, Companies I’ve Visited, and Jobs I’ve Shadowed. I wanted to make them pages, and have all of the blogs that deal with those topics organized well under those pages at the top. However, since I haven’t started my trip to contain any of those tags, I’m trying to figure out how else to do the tags. So, you gave some good suggestions. I guess I just need to figure it out and start tagging them.
